In 1977, PortSide Properties, Inc. opened the doors of their first facility in Sturgeon Bay with the goal of providing the Door County community with creative, individualized home designs, quality construction and on-going customer service.

PortSide Founder and current CEO Fran Shefchik's vision was "that by providing the utmost in quality and by our on-going customer service, we are working toward making Customers for Life."

He also started the company emphasizing three key elements:
- customer focus
- respect and
- teamwork.

With these elements running the company, the company continued to grow to one of the largest general contractors in the area.

PortSide has evolved as our customers' needs have changed. In 1989, in an effort to assist customers in product selection, we opened Door County's first Home Showroom in Sturgeon Bay. This provided customers the opportunity to make hands-on selections of their home products within one easy stop. That same year, we expanded our business by responding to the need for remodeling services in Door County.

By 1994, PortSide expanded its services to the Oshkosh area. Our service area now extends from the tip of Door County through the entire Fox Valley.

2001 ushered in a new era for PortSide with the opening of our new and expanded Home Design Center and offices in the Industrial Park in Door County. Our customers are now able to walk through kitchens, touch countertops, open and close windows and doors and choose their favorite home products.

Only four years later, in 2005, a similiar building was constructed in the Fox Valley. The new office and Home Design Center are part of a larger site called the Building Solutions Center. Filled with all construction related businesses, the construction process will ease into one stop shopping.

Over the past thirty-four years, PortSide has worked on over 2,700 jobs. More than 1,500 of those projects were new homes. Last year alone, PortSide built approximately 60 homes and designed 85% of the homes built.

After 29 years as President of the company, Fran become CEO of the company and his brother, Paul Shefchik began serving as President in 2006. Paul has spent more than twenty years with PortSide in all areas of the company.

PortSide began to implement its ESOP benefit plan in 2005. An ESOP is a benefit plan which makes the employees of a company the owners of that company. PortSide's owners Fran Shefchik and Bob Stoehr decided on an ESOP as a succession plan for their company. Fran and Bob believed empowering the employees as owners in the company was the best way to secure the company's future.

PortSide's employees realize that as owners they have a unique opportunity to make an impact on their own future. We are proud to be Employee Owned and know that having a PortSide owner on every job site is a benefit our customers will enjoy for years to come.

PortSide Builders, Inc. continues to provide full service construction services from the tip of Door County throughout the entire Fox Valley.
